Biography

Venezuelan conductor and double bassist Juan Guevara was shaped by the renowned “El Sistema”.He performed with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra for over a decade at venues like Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Berlin Philharmonie, and Amsterdam Concertgebouw, under maestros Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Claudio Abbado, Gustavo Dudamel, and Simon Rattle, and more. In Portugal, he has played with Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música, Orquestra do Norte, and Orquestra de Câmara de Cascais e Oeiras.Guevara holds a Bachelor’s in Double Bass from UNEARTE, Caracas, and a Master’s in Contemporary Performance from Berklee College of Music, Valencia. Since 2020, he has studied conducting at Opus 23 Conducting Academy with Miguel Romea and Andrés Salado. In 2022, he was selected for the BSP 3rd International Conducting Masterclass with Douglas Bostock. He served as Principal Conductor of the Zana Batuta Orchestra and Assistant Conductor for Mahler’s Fourth Symphony with Orquestra Sinfónica ESART under Miguel Romea.In 2025, after a competitive review process, Guevara was selected as an active participant in the Gulbenkian Masterclass with Maestro Lawrence Foster and the Orquestra Gulbenkian, preparing a repertoire spanning Mozart to Puccini, culminating in a public concert on July 3, 2025, at the Grande Auditório in Lisboa.
